On Tuesday evening, May 14, members of the Waightstill Avery Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and their guests convened at Lola’s Old Hickory House for dinner and the organization’s installation of officers for 2019-2021. The business meeting included installation of new members and presentation of the Community Service Award. Many of the guests were those who had been influential in programs during DAR President Sharon Jenkins’ term of office. Among the guests were Veterans History Museum Curator, Emmett Casciato, his wife Toni, and several members of the museum’s board of directors.
Emmett was completely surprised when President Jenkins announced that he was the DAR’s recipient of this year’s Community Service Award. Community Service awards are presented on local, state, and national levels to individuals and groups who have contributed to their communities in an outstanding voluntary, heroic, civil, or benevolent manner, or who have participated in or organized community activities.
As Sharon presented Emmett with the award, she thanked him for his service to the community and for his work on behalf of America’s veterans, as well as for his focus on education and preservation of our military history. Emmett thanked the DAR for the award and for the organization’s community service. And he encouraged all the evening’s participants to visit the museum!
